Birmingham Carnival Searches For Its First King

City to host colourful Caribbean festival in Handsworth Park and does not want queen to be lonely

ORGANISERS OF Birmingham’s annual carnival are gearing up to flood the city with Caribbean fun and are also looking to crown the first ever king.
The free event begins on Sunday August 4 in Handsworth Park, and about 30,000 people are expected to join in the festivities there and to line the streets to see the procession of steel bands, floats and carnival troupes.
Family-fun activities celebrating the best of Caribbean culture are scheduled for the park.
Traditionally, the carnival’s procession is led by the newly crowned queen, but this year will see her joined by the event’s first ever king.
Planners have called on young men aged 18 and over to head down to the BBC at Birmingham’s Mailbox tomorrow at 3pm for a chance of becoming the first carnival king.
Saturday will see judges looks at pretenders to the throne in the semi-finals, and the final will be held the following weekend on July 27 to determine the true king.
